What to Plant in the Fall for a Stronger Spring Yard

Cooler air and warm soil make fall one of the best planting windows for trees, shrubs, and cool-season lawns.

Fall planting gives roots time to establish without summer heat stress. Trees, shrubs, perennials, and spring bulbs often settle in better than the same plants forced through a July install.

Cool-season lawns also love early fall for overseeding and renovation. Water new plantings consistently until the ground freezes, and mulch to buffer temperature swings. Avoid planting so late that roots never grab before hard freeze in cold climates.

If you missed spring projects, ask what can still go in the ground this season. Many “wait until spring” jobs are really “we were too busy in spring” jobs.
