How to Reset a Weed-Infested Flower Bed

When weeds own the bed, spot-pulling fails. Clear, amend, edge, mulch, and replant with a maintenance plan.

A bed that has been neglected for a season or two often needs a reset, not another Saturday of tugging roots. Start by deciding what plants are worth saving. Remove weeds before they set seed, and dig out perennial weed roots as completely as you can.

Improve soil, re-cut edges, and lay a proper mulch depth after planting — not before you have finished arranging. Choose plants with spacing that fills in so bare soil does not invite the next invasion.

If the bed keeps sliding backward every summer, schedule periodic maintenance. Professional cleanups are often cheaper than replacing the same perennials every other year.
