Gravel, river rock, and boulders each solve different problems — and create different maintenance tradeoffs.
Rock can mulch arid beds, stabilize slopes, build dry creek beds, or act as sculpture. It does not eliminate weeds forever, and dark rock can heat root zones in full sun.
Use fabric judiciously if at all; trapped fines and decomposing leaves still create weed pockets. Edge rock areas cleanly so stone does not migrate into lawns and mower blades.
The best rock work looks intentional with plants, grade, and drainage. Random dumps of gravel are not a design — they are deferred maintenance.
