Transplanting Shrubs and Trees: When to DIY vs Call a Pro

Small shrubs in the right season can move. Large trees need equipment, root balls, and realistic survival odds.

Transplanting works best on younger plants, in dormant seasons appropriate to your climate, with as much root mass as you can move. Water well before digging, keep roots moist, and replant at the same depth without delay.

Large trees and established shrubs often need mechanical digging and aftercare that exceeds weekend tools. Survival is never guaranteed — especially in summer heat or when roots are severely cut.

Sometimes redesigning around a plant — or replacing it — costs less than a heroic move that fails. Ask for an honest assessment before you rent a tree spade.
