Shade Trees That Cool the House and Raise Landscape Value

Deciduous shade on the south and west sides can cut summer heat while letting winter sun through.

Well-placed shade trees are long-term infrastructure. They cool outdoor living areas, reduce solar gain on walls and windows, and soften a property from the street. Deciduous trees are especially useful where you want summer shade and winter light.

Placement beats species hype. A tree too close to the foundation or under wires becomes a liability. Give roots uncompacted soil, water deeply through establishment, and mulch correctly — never volcano-mulch the trunk.

Shade tree planting is a legacy decision. Plan for the canopy you want in twenty years, not only the look in year two.
