How to Screen Utility Boxes with Plantings

Hide meters and transformers without blocking access panels or creating a code problem.

Utility boxes are necessary and ugly. Soften them with shrubs, grasses, and layered planting that still leaves clear access for utility workers. Never bury or permanently block panels, and check setback rules before you dig near buried lines.

Choose plants with mature widths that will not crush against equipment. Evergreen structure helps year-round; deciduous plants alone leave the box exposed all winter. A shallow bed with mulch and edging looks intentional instead of like a plant stuck in the lawn.

This is a small project with outsized curb appeal — and a common add-on when we are already refreshing front-yard beds.
