Landscape Retaining Walls: What Homeowners Should Know First

Walls manage slopes and create usable space — but drainage, height, and permits matter more than block color.

Retaining walls turn unusable slopes into terraces, patios, and planting beds. They also handle serious lateral pressure from soil and water. Short garden walls and tall structural walls are different projects with different engineering needs.

Drainage behind the wall is non-negotiable. Trapped water is a common reason walls lean or fail. Material choice — timber, block, stone — should match height, look, and maintenance expectations. Local codes may require permits or engineered designs above certain heights.

If you are grading for a patio or fixing erosion, get the wall planned with the rest of the hardscape so elevations, drainage, and planting all work as one system.
