How to Repair a Thin or Patchy Lawn

Bare spots rarely fix themselves. Diagnose why turf thinned, then choose seed, sod, or a full renovation.

Patchy lawns usually have a cause: shade, pet traffic, grubs, compacted soil, dull mower blades, or watering that encourages shallow roots. Treating the symptom with seed alone often fails if the underlying stress stays in place.

Small spots can be raked clean, amended lightly, and seeded or plugged. Larger thin areas often need aeration and overseeding in the right season for your grass type. Where coverage is gone and you need instant results — high-visibility front yards, steep slopes, or heavy use areas — sod can be the cleaner reset.

If more than half the lawn looks weak, it may be time for a renovation plan instead of chasing patches every spring. That is where a lawn care visit pays for itself: matching grass type, timing, and soil work to your property.
