Plant Guide: Japanese Maples for Color and Structure

Seasonal flower beds in a residential landscape

Elegant understory trees for filtered light — protect them from hot afternoon scorch and poorly drained soil.

Japanese maples bring refined branching and seasonal color to courtyards, entry gardens, and shaded lawns. Most prefer morning sun or dappled light and soil that drains yet stays evenly moist.

Choose cultivars for mature size; weeping laceleaf forms stay lower, while upright types become small trees. Mulch the root zone, water during dry spells, and avoid reflected heat from south-facing walls when possible.

They are statement plants. One well-sited maple often looks better than three competing for attention in a small bed.
