Pick shrubs for mature size and climate first. Low maintenance starts with the right plant, not more pruning.
Low-maintenance shrubs hold their shape, resist common pests in your region, and do not need weekly shearing to look acceptable. Think compact evergreens, durable flowering shrubs, and species that match your sun and soil.
“Foolproof” still depends on location. A shrub that thrives in one hardiness zone may struggle in another. Read mature height and width on the tag and believe them. Crowding creates disease and constant cutting.
A designer can build a short plant palette that repeats across the yard — calmer to look at and easier to maintain than a collection of one-offs from every garden center trip.
