Fewer species, smarter spacing, and plants that do not demand constant division keep borders manageable.
Low maintenance does not mean zero maintenance. It means choosing perennials that hold their shape, resist pests in your area, and do not need staking or constant deadheading to look acceptable.
Mass plants in drifts, mulch well, and avoid packing so tightly that you create a weeding nightmare. Include evergreen or woody structure so winter does not erase the border.
A border designed for your schedule will still need seasonal cutbacks and mulch — just not weekly drama.
