A little thatch is normal. A thick mat blocks water and air — but aggressive dethatching can also damage healthy turf.
Thatch is a layer of stems and roots between green grass and soil. A half-inch or less can protect the crown. Much more than that and water, fertilizer, and air struggle to reach the root zone — especially on vigorous grasses or over-fertilized lawns.
Before you rent a machine, check thickness and moisture. Soft, spongy turf that sheds water is a clue. Core aeration often helps more than power-raking for compacted soils, and the two are not interchangeable. Dethatch when grass is actively growing so it can recover quickly.
If you are unsure whether you have thatch, compaction, or both, a lawn visit can save you from tearing up a yard that really needed aeration and overseeding instead.
