Light paths, entries, and a few focal plants — skip the runway look and glare into the neighbors’ windows.

Good landscape lighting makes evening arrivals safer and shows off trees, walls, and architecture after dark. Bad lighting creates glare, light pollution, and a yard that looks like a used-car lot.

Start with path and step lights, a warmly lit entry, and one or two uplights on strong specimens. Low-voltage systems are common for residential work; LED fixtures cut energy use and bulb changes. Aim fixtures carefully and use shields where needed.

Lighting is easiest to install when beds and hardscape are designed together — running cable later through finished lawns is messier. If you are renovating outdoor living areas, plan lighting in the same phase.
