Know what you are seeing before you spray. Timing and plant choice matter as much as products.
Japanese beetles skeletonize leaves in midsummer and can overwhelm roses, linden, and many ornamentals. Hand-picking into soapy water helps on small plantings; traps can attract more beetles into your yard if placed poorly. Grub treatments target the larval stage in turf and are a different decision than spraying adults on shrubs.
Other common pests — aphids, spider mites, bagworms, and scale — need identification first. Beneficial insects, water sprays, and pruning out infestations solve more problems than rotating through every concentrate on the shelf.
When damage is spreading across a property, a landscape professional can identify the pest, timing, and whether cultural changes will reduce next year’s pressure.
