Layered shrubs and evergreens soften fence lines and add privacy that wood or vinyl alone cannot.
A fence sets a boundary, but planting is what makes it feel like part of the yard instead of a blank wall.
Mix evergreen structure with deciduous shrubs so you get year-round screening and seasonal interest. Stagger heights instead of planting one rigid row, and leave room for mature width so hedges do not press into walkways or the fence boards.
If you are choosing a new fence, decide privacy goals first — solid panels, open pickets, or a shorter fence with taller planting often looks better than the tallest blank wall your code allows.
