No plant is deer-proof when animals are hungry. Stack less-tasty choices, fencing, and placement.
Deer preferences vary by region and season, and a starving deer will sample plants sold as “resistant.” Still, fragrant herbs, fuzzy foliage, and certain shrubs are damaged less often than hostas, daylilies, and tulips.
Combine plant choice with strategy: put the most tempting plants closer to the house, use repellents consistently during peak pressure, and consider fencing for high-value beds. Motion and dogs help on some properties and do nothing on others.
A landscape plan that assumes deer pressure from day one saves you from replacing the same foundation plants every spring.
