Choose vines by weight, attachment method, and whether your fence can handle them long-term.
Vines can turn a blank fence into a garden wall — or destroy wood and overwhelm neighbors. Twining vines need trellis or wire; clinging vines attach to surfaces and may not belong on wood siding or delicate fences.
Match vigor to the structure. Aggressive growers need annual cutting back. Flowering vines add seasonal interest; evergreen vines provide year-round cover in mild climates.
Install support hardware correctly and leave access for fence repairs. A planned vine is charming; an accidental jungle is a service call.
